I provide oral history training for community, professional or academic groups. I also offer free oral history advice through ‘Ask Al’, Oral History Victoria’s online Information and Advice service, on the last Tuesday of each month, 5.30-6.30pm.
I have been teaching oral history in diverse settings since 1985, in Australia and around the world. Highlights include the Master in Life History Research I pioneered at the University of Sussex in the 1990s, an oral history residential course in Malaysia for representatives from the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, and training for staff in the Victorian Department of Premier and Cabinet. In 2018 I received the Award for Teaching Excellence in the Arts and Social Sciences at the Australian Awards for University Teaching.
I have taught the following courses independently and with Oral History Victoria, both face to face and online (often in collaboration with Sarah Rood from Way Back When):
Oral History for Beginners
The Interview Relationship
Conducting Interviews on Sensitive and Painful Topics
Oral History and Photographs
Interpreting Memories
Writing Oral History
Please contact me if you would like to discuss oral history training opportunities.
